D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT 2005-2008Founded by Kenmei Nagaoka, Drawing and Manual launched their first office in Hongo, Tokyo in 1997. The company handles web, video, and graphic design assignments, while also searching for new business areas with long-term design development potential. It is their belief that design for living cannot exist without a firm basis in reality. In 1999, the company began to purchase preexisting high-quality, well-designed products from recycling stores and then market them on an experimental basis through their web store, “D&MA.” This initiative was so well-received that six months later, Drawing and Manual launched a new concept: their ‘dream design department store’. Named the D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT, the shop was a physical manifestation of their virtual resale shop. Filled with furniture, housewares, publications, clothing, and accessories, the shop was an immediate success.Today, the company is developing the D&DEPARTMENT NIPPON PROJECT concept further to create a chain of D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT stores in forty-seven prefectures throughout Japan. Furthermore, they are developing a ‘dream hotel’ project entitled D&MOTELS STORE, as well as a dining establishment enterprise called D&COFFEE.
